This guy is genuinely climbing towards the top of the list of my fav musicians ever. Wish I would've started jamming his stuff way way way sooner. He never did any wrong from what I can tell.

I made a draft list of my “favorite bands/artists” and Coltrane was guaranteed Top 3, and likely would be #1 if I actually went through and tried to sort the artists beyond initial subgroups.

What in particular gives him the edge over others within the jazz arena? I mean obviously I know he’s a 🐐 but genuinely curious what separates him from others for you guys

Breadth of his discog (which I'm still exploring) and his ability to turn complex ideas into soulful expressions are up there, surely. "Spiral" from Giant Steps comes to mind for what makes him great to me - such a dense, intricate central unit (the opening part that ratchets up the tension and then just blasts away over it), but he suffuses it with so much vitality that it's never struck me as overly contorted. Lot of different angles to take on him though, think it speaks volumes that his merits are so hard to catch in a pithy one- or two-pointer

Yeah he’s definitely incredible at balancing soulful expression with very complex composition / creativity. I’m yet to touch the surface of what he’s capable of despite having heard a lot of his most heralded albums

For me personally, I think Coltrane is one of the most emotionally charged jazz musicians of all time; I contrast this with early Davis, or Coleman, whose feats are no less impressive but tend to be a bit more technical (there are exceptions, of course), whereas Coltrane's expression was almost always soulful and spiritual in some way, even when he was exploring the more "traditional" ends of the jazz landscape (see: BLUE TRAIN). His venture down the path of spiritual jazz and eventually free jazz is what solidifies him as the greatest of all time; the way he often masterfully blends the two distinct styles in a way that felt fresh and, quite honestly, has yet to be replicated (OM is probably the single best example of this, but quite literally almost everything he did from this record onward would serve as evidence.)

The funny thing is, hearing his late-career work, the heavily spiritual and free jazz stuff, totally recontextualizes his earlier work. After ingesting stuff like OM and ASCENSION and MEDITATIONS and SUN SHIP and INTERSTELLAR SPACE, you can go back to several of the "classics" a la GIANT STEPS, MY FAVORITE THINGS, BLUE TRAIN, etc., and hear the roots of that later work starting to take hold.

I think the most miraculous thing is how much wonderful music this man gave us and he only lived to be 40 years old.

Nice thoughts. I very much enjoy all the latter-day Coltrane I’ve heard and Om remains my fave of that selection (Meditations is closest). That’s an interesting point about how it contextualises his earlier classics. Cool.

but yeah his spiritual side is awesome and the guy was surely nothing short of a genius; to have created such a vast amount of brilliant and creative music in such a relatively short space of time

Love all the feedback. I’m always curious to hear how quintessential works/artists shape individuals thoughts/feelings etc and Trane is obviously a major contributor to that so I wanted to hear yalls thoughts. Cheers

Also agree totally Tec on Blue Train. One of my faves from him for sure. And I can definitely see how Miles was pushing more technical directions and expansion of composition etc by singularly trying to push the genre to new heights and stuff whereas Coltrane had more soul and other intentions behind his shifts

In my limited experience so far, its his ability to make chaos sound so beautiful while also being able to slow it down and have it sound equally as cheerful for me. The guy's music is just straight up addicting and makes me happy. That's basically my reasoning for loving him so much lol.
