What was April? April was (uh) Techdog and other electronic ambient things. Did a deep dive into 70s German creativity sauce, guided by the lukewarm hand of Harry Sword. Fuck there is a lot of music that exists that is good (which is good). Iā€™m so tired. Thereā€™s no end.

Psych Pop [2009]

Soz got distracted by employment and beef. This is good. Somewhat standard flavour for the an/co eps in that itā€™s a great snippet of colour and texture and I wish it was longer and fuller. [3.5]

Electropop / Pop Rap [2008]

What a completely fucked run of albums in 808s to MBD(etc) to yeezus, like inventing a new ye every couple of years. Flamboyant and sad. Maximalist and sad. Idk one of those crying through fake smile album experiences. Longer than it needed to be but mostly love whatā€™s left when you skim the fat. [3.5]

8th May 2024

Hip Hop [2011]

Kinda dumb this came out a year before good kid, so much goofier and ā€œin draftā€ vibes, but whiffs of the spicy album craft and onion layers that Kendrick went on to perfect on his next 2 LPs. Weird one to rate as I donā€™t think Iā€™ll ever return to this, but cool that it exists. [3]

Pop Rap / R&B [2011]

Such a chore to get through, despite the handful of super vibe moments. Fun checking both beef merchantā€™s early era (11ā€™) records. Lyrics on this. The lyrics on this. The. Lyrics. On. This. [2]

Stoner / Doom / Drone Metal [2003]

Rejamming after my book told me Iā€™m a dork. Kinda fucks. Remember being bored by this but itā€™s (pretty)(hypnotic) and a cultural fucking icon at this point in terms of weed culture / music / etc. [3.5] will keep spinning and growing

12th May 2024

UK Bass / Experimental Hip Hop [2024]

So not the one trick pony that I thought he was. Goes in almost trip hop directions, then back to ADHD-core, then into softer EDM home territory. Lots to chew on. [3.5]

Snoring (Music to Sleep to)

12th May 2024

Ambient / Classical / Minimalism [2016]

Has no damn right being this good and existing in this manā€™s anxiety inducing (brilliant) catalogue. Very Steve Reich / Steve Roach idk man super pretty super unexpected blissful blissful blissful. [4.5]

UK Bass / Classical [2021]

Iā€™m on an igloo kick canā€™t you tell?!?!?!?!?!?! Fuck Iā€™m tired but these warped classical wubs of incoherence be soothing my caved (in) skull. [3] feels a touch too aloof / in draft

15th May 2024

UK Bass / Glitch Hop [2017]

Mad that this was released as, effectively, a promo for his 2017 debut, yet itā€™s so fully realised and good for a quickie DJ mix. Super fun. [3.5]
18Albert Ayler
Spiritual Unity

16th May 2024

Free Jazz [1965]

Takes that low-chaos high-melody free jazz thing on a Shape of Jazz to Come and turns up the chaos just a tad. Both ā€˜Ghostsā€™ are moving as fuck, eerie, spiritual, gushing, well named. Bassist is cracked, drummer is a popcorn machine, Ayler is a hurricane. [4]

20th May 2024

Ambient / Techno / IDM [1993]

Figured may as well run the discog (and sorry (to no one) Iā€™ve been gone am on holiday so not really musicing). Very Selected Ambient Works 85-92 but more uniform, maybe? Or maybe Iā€™ve heard more electronic now and this makes more sense. Super warm compared to what Iā€™ve heard from ae already (confield mainly) and I am pleased. [4]
20Cecil Taylor
Conquistador!

23rd May 2024

Free Jazz [1968]

Cecilā€™s usual madness dialled back half a step and the worms writhe at the surface. Super duper funsies, this. Expressive, conversational, thumping, beautiful. [4.5]

Update (27.05.24): fwiw I think it is a [4.5] but debump to [4] until Iā€™m more familiar
21Howard Shore
The Fellowship of the Ring: The Complete Recording

26th-27th May 2024

Classical / Soundtrack [2001-2003]

Listened to all three of these on the way back from the Outer Hebrides as it was a 11 hour drive and we felt like doing something silly (and tbf it suited the environment). Obviously great soundtrack. The complete versions are a testament to how well Shore mapped out the world here; you can pick out the filmic moments beat by beat. Also didnā€™t realise quite how much of film 1 is just NazgĆ»l music rip. 10 hours of nostalgia. [4.5]
22Howard Shore
The Two Towers: The Complete Recordings

26th-27th May 2024

Classical / Soundtrack [2001-2003]

Including all three separately to make myself feel less bad about having no time for music recently; busy job and then holiday; though tbf it was a very good holiday. This is probably the worst of the three soundtracks fwiw. [4.5]
23Howard Shore
The Return of the King: The Complete Recordings

27th May 2024

Trip-Hop [1994]

I checked this as part of my 2016 CLASSICS rec list and have no firm recollection of it other than finding it nice, but not ā€œgettingā€ it, it or itā€™s status. IdK, I was (uh) 21(?) then and mostly still into my narrow lanes and not much else, there was too much ā€œdifferentā€ going on here (the sample heavy hip hop roots, soulful vox, electronic beeps and jazz influences) for me to wrap head around, despite how surface level listening is easy business with this (it vibes). Coming back around 8 years later is very rewarding. [4.5] pretty and sad are characteristics I remember, but not how weird haunting and emotive this is (understatedly)

Update (28.05.24): after jamming incessantly debump to [4] will return in winter months
25Saidan
Jigoku: Spiraling Chasms of Blackst Hell

28th May 2024

Melodic Black Metal / Punk [2021]

Like if Attack on Titan did black metal? Has that Burning Spirits Japanese lo-fi punk with the melodies thing going on. Feels half baked but also pure rough ready and emotive. One dimensional but the dimension is good. [4]

POST HUMAN: NeX GEn

29th May 2024

Pop [2024]

Ngl this is pure guilty pleasure sticky sweet frosting indulgence. Enter Shikari meets 100 gecs meets Falling in Reverse 2013 version meets Hybrid Theory meets fucking chainsmokers idk itā€™s hideous the lyrics are godawful the genre hopping is shallow and tacky the prod is too much and yet and yet and yet it fucks. Makes the 11 year old emo sad boi that never really left me feel heard and while I donā€™t agree entirely with the self-indulgent melodrama that drapes the mental health awareness training that this shoots for tbh the dumb blunt self-obsessed way it goes about unpacking those issues is exactly how my brain processes them in a panic on a shit day. Itā€™s lowest common denominator relatability in silly shoes and I am a fan. [3.5]
27Amaro Freitas
Y'Y

30th May 2024

Jazz (Post-Minimalism / Third Stream) [2024]

Weird angular stabby boi of soft cheese and pizzazz. Flirts with melody and percussion in his form, a thump of bass from the left, magenta popcorn in the middle, sprinkles of starlight over the right. Feels v modern classical adjacent, perhaps a touch too clinical on occasion, but overall lovely. [3.5]
28Saidan
Onryo II: Her Spirit Eternal

30th May 2024

Melodic Black Metal / Punk [2022]

Blackened anime metal does indeed go hard on electric boogaloo edition. [4]
29Saidan
Visual Kill: The Blossoming of Psychotic Depravity

31st May 2024

Melodic Black Metal / Punk [2024]

Probably the worst of the three posi vibe blood eruption LPs this band has put out and I have now listened to but tbf itā€™s hard to hate; really fun, palatable, non-tiresome formula of major key deth that Iā€™ll for sure keep coming back to as long as they keep making em. [3.5]
