First of all, let me say that "Awake" is my favorite Dream Theater album. Why? Because it is very diverse and the production is perfect.
I've listened to this album many many times and I still have to find a flaw in it.
The whole band is in perfect shape: guitarist John Petrucci delivers some awesome guitar solos ("Erotomania", "Lie" - 2 solos!); drummer Mike Portnoy is incredible as always especially on "6:00", "The Mirror" and "Lie"; bassist John Myung is one of my favorite bassists of all time because he is very subtle, but when you can actually hear him, he is mind blowing; vocalist James LaBrie provides his best performance on this album especially on "Voices", "The Silent Man" and "Lifting Shadows off a Dream".
Last, but not least, we have keyboardist Kevin Moore. Now, he is the reason why I adore this album so much. Sadly, this would be the last album with him.
Anyway, as I said before, the songs are diverse: you have some heavy songs:"6:00", "Caught in a Web", "Voices", "The Mirror" and "Lie"; some ballads: "Innocence Faded" , "Lifting Shadows off a Dream" and "Scarred"; an instrumental: "Erotomania"; an acoustic song: "The Silent Man, and a very sad piano - driven song: "Space - Dye Vest".

Song rating:

6:00 - 4.5/5
Caught in a Web - 5/5
Innocence Faded - 4.5/5
Erotomania - 5/5
Voices - 5/5
The Silent Man - 5/5
The Mirror - 4.5/5
Lie - 5/5
Lifting Shadows off a Dream - 5/5
Scarred - 4.5/5
Space - Dye Vest - 6/5 - my favorite song on the album :)

My only complaint is that they didn't included the instrumental "Eve" on the album, but you can find it on "The Silent Man" single.

I will not read another review of yours until you connect those sentences into a paragraph.

John Myung is so overrated. Aside from his few solos, the only time I ever hear him he is mimicking the guitar lines.

this needs a lot of elaboration to justify the classic rating

it's an excellent album (one of the better DT releases definitely) though I prefer images and scenes.

abandoning Keith Moon was the worst choice Dream Theater ever made.

Anthracs - Time to get those earplugs out of your ears then. Or maybe just watch him perform live.

Images and WORDS.

This review is too short, especially because you rated the album classic. And PLEASE, make paragraphs.

Fine, give me examples where he is laying down great basslines that aren't mimicking the guitar lines and I'll recant.

This Dying Soul, pretty much anything off of the Live at Budokan DVD, Octavarium, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, Plenty off of Scenes From A Memory and Systematic Chaos just off the top of my head.
No hard feelings meant, but there really is good reason that he's considered one hell of a good bassist, and sometimes one of the best in the world. You wont necessarily get a sense of it until you see him live, much like Mike Portnoy.
