Somebody requested this one, so just to be nice, I'm goin' for it.

Images and Words is among my top ten albums of all time. It really shows the amazing range of Dream Theater's musical abilities.

Pull Me Under: Not really anything special in my opinion, definitely a good song, but not much more.

Another Day: Great song. It starts off kind of iffy, and they bring in a soprano sax player, making it sound like elevator music, which I hate. After that, the song picks up and is wondeful.

Take The Time: A classic. It's great and uplifting, features an awesome instrumental, classic DT.

Surrender: A really good song, nothing amazing, but good nonetheless.

Metropolis Pt. 1: BEST SONG OF ALL TIME. This song totally rules, it starts off with the lonely keyboards, then the guitar comes in, all distortionified and cool. When Labrie's vocals come in, they're very high, he sings at the top of his range this whole song. One of their best instrumental parts follows this, then a finich with the vocals. Awesome song.

Under a Glass Moon: This song starts off with a pretty cool guitar riff, then the vocals come and it's pretty grovy. One of the best guitar solos of all time.

Wait For Sleep: This is the song Vacant tried to be. This is an all-aroud great song, just piano and vocals. Makes a great intro for:

Learning to Live: This is the last track on the album. It's so awesome, a true epic. My short attention span demands that I stop this review, so I'm not gonna go in detail about this song. It's equal with Metropolis Pt. 1, though. Amazing song.

On that note, this album gets a 5/5 from me. Great stuff:thumb:

Definitely a 5/5, Dream Theater's best.

In my opinion Learning To Live is better than Metropolis, but only by a little bit. LTL is my second face DT song, I love it. The ending is amazing (but then again so is Metropolis').

I like the fact that on Take The Time, each member was assigned a verse each to write separate from one another, then they wrote the chorus together.

Finally, it's Surrounded, not Surrender. ;)

This is the best prog metal album IMO. The odd thing is that I absolutely love every song. Even on other records that I would rate a 5/5 there is at least one song that I don't like. I will never get bored with this album. Nice review.

^ I agree, it's one of the few albums where I like every song.

images and words is an album that should be a part of every metal/prog fan's collection. This is without a doubt DTs best album. My favourite songs are Wait for sleep, metropolis pt. 1 and pull me under. I give this album a 5/5. DT really came up with some good material on this album.

I prefer Scenes From A Memory, but Images and Words is fucking amazing as well. On this CD, I really dig the mellower tracks as well as the ones with the crazy instrumental stuff, I like the slower tracks less on other DT albums. Definetely classic.

You know I picked this up after reading the rave reviews in this forum and I'm sorry to say I'm just not sold on this band. Their musicianship is 1st rate, no argument there but I do not like the vocals at all. An while I find myself really liking certain musical passages within a song, overall, the same song kinda leaves me flat....oh well cant like em all.

I felt the same way at first. I got the cd because of how many praises it got here at MX, and was severely dissapointed. I hated the vocals and everything, but after awhile it grew on me. All my favorite albums have had to grow on me. Just keep in mind, give it more of a chance, you may grow to love it like I did:thumb:

^ I find if i like an album / song at first it gets very tiresome very quickly, but if i'm not too fond of it, it eventualy grows on me and becomes an all time favorite. Images and words takes lots of time to grow on you but once youlike it; you're hooked :thumb:

My uncle has this CD, and I've put it on my PC since...it's a great disc, but I think your review was a bit bare bones...

You're right. I do better reviews now, the first few I made were pretty nondescript.

This is one of the DT cd's I must buy. I've only heard around three songs from Images, great stuff. I love Pull Me Under, but I can't compare it to the rest of the album since I haven't heard it.

Train of Thought is a great metal album...that's probably why I love it so much...every song on there is an ass-kicking good time...except Vacant...:p

To be honest, Vacant is probably my favorite song off that album. The reason being that while I love DT, I really have to be in the mood for some crazy shred-solos, random time signature changes, etc. when I listen to them. Slow songs like 'Waiting for Sleep' and 'Vacant' don't have any of that, and as such are a bit 'easier' so listen to.

Also, I'd like to add that the Cello in Vacant is absolutely beautiful.

And being a cellist myself, I love it as well...Waiting for Sleep is a great song too

...but I love being able to headbang and have good driving music as well, and the rest of ToT does that quite well :thumb:

Awesome album, solid all the way through. Every song is a great piece in its own right. Wait For Sleep is my least favorite, although it is a very short song, so things are still all good. As for my favorites; Metropolis, Learning to Live, and Take the Time. Pull Me Under is just a rockin song, as is Under A Glass Moon. Another Day and Surrounded are very nice songs too, to put it simply.

I'm relectant to give an album 5/5, but this album truly deserves it. Any (progressive) metal fan should own this CD, and any music fan in general should enjoy it.

I just bought this album, along with Awake today. I've only heard parts of songs so far, but from what I've heard, this album is nothing but sheer brilliance.

Nice review too Kaden. :thumb:

I have this album now. It's pretty good, but teh thing that really pisses me off/keeps me from listening to it Portnoy's snare. Argh.

I love this album, definitely a 5/5. Hearing most of those songs live, was especially good
