4.5 superb | Necrotica | June 2nd 14 | The triggered percussion in conjunction with the soothing sounds of the soprano sax ignite my imagination like a tiger who defends his young from the ferocity of the Australian Tasmanian Devil. Whenever my ears experience the majesty of Learning to Live, I like to pretend that I am a little toddler whose living is truly learning. This album is the King Richard III of progressive metal. This is the winter of our discontent from trying to air drum to odd time signatures and polyrhythms!

0.0 | Interviewer/surveyer | November 26th 07 | yeah...DT can't write good songs.
Bands like DT that try to create something unique don't always succeed %100 of the time. Look at Opeth. They're one of my favorite bands right now...but %50 of their material is absolutely terrible. Not every song is going to be "The Leper Affinity" or "Metropolis Part 1" status, and there is going to be a lot of failure when create unique music.
I think its funny and idiotic for anyone to say DT can't write good songs. You can say you dislike their style, but saying their lack the musical knowledge to write good is absurd. I can only think of one or two metal bands in the world right now that can write a song as good or better than DT.

3.5 great | EasterInTheBatcave | June 9th 16 | I'm not a Dream Theater fan, but this record has good qualities. The songwriting is actually very good for the most part ("Another Day," "Metropolis, Pt.1," "Under a Glass Moon," my favourite song by the band), it's not too long, and the palpable pretension on the band's later material is nowhere to be found. However, it's a really cheesy listen. LaBrie's vocal delivery and some of the lyrics are just so over-the-top. On the plus side, the distinctly '80s production (though this came out in the '90s) actually compliments that cheesiness well. Anyway, provided you aren't lactose intolerant, Images and Words should satisfy.

4.5 superb | Jared Floryan | September 28th 15 | Abandoned in the middle of a lifeless, wintery forest, you awake from your painful slumber to find an escalator that leads to a certain music release capable of drowning your sorrows; alcohol isn't always best for obscuring your grimdark troubles. Stopping yourself from questioning the logic behind said escalator, you then get on it - and as you finally arrive to the top, Images and Words is later transmuted into your long-lost sister. At that moment when the two of you reunited, there was much embracing. Putting this rather cheesy story aside, the Long Island-based progressive metal band Dream Theater's major label debut is very nearly a tour de force overflowing with technical proficiency and ultimate magnetism. It's powerful from an instrumentation standpoint, intelligent in terms of overall composition, and the album also boasts a really cool cover illustration. Images and Words is one prog party that's worth attending - and whilst there are few people who might be put off by the silliness of it all, others like myself think DT know what's up regarding that. Damn electrifying.

5.0 classic | tom6 | October 24th 10 | I can think of very few metal albums that can boast having four songs like Pull Me Under, Take the Time, Metropolis and Learning to Live. After one gets past an initial awkwardness with the keyboards and high vocals (both of which are excellent, by the way, but an acquired taste), Images and Words captivates them with its beautiful and often very intricate melodies. One can feel a certain lack of dynamics from both LaBrie's whispering-or-yelling delivery and Portnoy's triggered drums, but the varied songwriting makes up for it and then some.

4.5 superb | clairvoyant | December 23rd 06 | One of my favorite albums. Pretty much perfect all the way through. From the power metal-like opener to the brilliant Learning to Live, the whole album never stops for a bad song. Another Day is very good ballad with some catchy sax lines. Take the Time is a strong rocker with some great lead work at the end by John Petrucci and some excellent drum work by Mr. Portnoy. Surrounded may be the weakest song on here, but yet is an awesome song at the same time, so that's saying something. The four ending tracks work together to build up a climatic ending with Learning To Live, something that was not since often in music since the 1970s. Overall Images & Words succeeds with the complex progressive metal sound, and as a result is the best progressive album since the 1970s.

5.0 classic | JackisJack | July 20th 23 | A progressive metal masterpiece in every sense of the word. From Mike Portnoy's incredible percussion, to the star like synth work by Kevin Moore, John Petruci's guitar, John Myung's basslines and solos.. The musicianship on display is apparent from the first track to the last one. James LaBrie is also at his best vocally here. There is so much power and range to his voice that you can't help but feel as if he perfectly led each track with his singing ability. While many may say Dream Theater is a technically overwhelming band, it's easy for anybody to listen to this album and understand why they have retained such high status in the prog metal scene.

4.5 superb | LikeWindOnANipple | June 26th 23 | This one's got cheese, but goddamn, does it have some classics. The 2nd half of this album is like an artifact that belongs in a prog museum. The light tracks blend better with the track flow than on later albums where there're obvious radio ballads that are easy to skip. This is easily a landmark release for prog metal.

0.0 | 67BAZINGA | February 1st 21 | This historical album came to the musical market at the right moment ! The world of music was at that time, conquered by the nihilistic grunge
movement and everything seemed to be in a big turmoil and fog ! 1992 is the year when this band changed the face of music and managed to fight against all the trends of the moment, delivering an astonishing album which is even now, in 2021 very actual, modern and timeless indeed ! What makes this album so special ? First of all, it's a paradox, because in fact IMAGES AND WORDS doesn't bring anything new, but in fact managed to make a great mix of many musical styles , from metal to prog and some AOR, but all made in a very clever and perfectionist way, pushing some technical and melodic boundaries to a very high level ! Everybody knows that the guys in DREAM THEATER are very skilled musicians, all with a musical degree at a famous music school in Boston, but this album was so mature and strong from the point of view of the quality of the compositions, that gave to the album a special value !They were strongly promoted bu MTV too, which was quite unusual, in a full grunge wave, and that gave DREAM THEATER a certain notoriety among a big number of music fans ! The new vocalist, the Canadian guy JAMES LA BRIE was the major plus for the band which had released a debut album released on the market, but with a weaker vocalist! So, a myth was born and the rest is history ! 5 stars for a milestone classic masterpiece!

0.0 | Jeffery J. Bigglestein | June 30th 20 | oowowoo if I wanted to listen to a shitty singer whine over 60 fucking time signatures I'd listen to yes or rush. The intro riff to "pull me under" is a ripoff of "welcome home sanitarium" by Metallica and thats based and a fact.

4.5 superb | YRI | May 19th 20 | Not their best album, but a classic for sure. Especially for a sophomore album, this record is still amazing to this day. While the production may be a bit lacking (Mike Porntoy's drums sound pretty bad imo), the songwriting is great and beautiful. James Labrie shows some of his best vocal chops.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Deadwing2112 | March 26th 20 | James LaBrie joins the fold and Dream Theater's course is altered forever. Images and Words serves as the band's reboot and delivers a magnificent album combining the best elements of both rock and metal in the progressive context. The musicianship is top notch and remarkably the band sounds seasoned beyond its years. The opener Pull Me Under received considerable commercial attention however the record itself is solid and delivers the goods one track after another.

3.5 great | GamamJ | March 5th 20 | A massive improvement in quality by Dream Theater over the first album in terms of songwriting, yes, but also a massive increase in cheese. Not as big of a fan of the atmosphere on this one, and the ballads are extra weak imo. THe first side overall, other than Take the Time are not all that, and while the second one is amazing, DT would only go upwards from here.

0.0 | altertide0 | July 24th 15 | On their second album Dream Theater merge the thrash metal riffs of Metallica with the progressive rock gymnastics of King Crimson, essentially inventing a (relatively) new language. Too bad stylistically much of it still relies on old cliches (the banal hooks of "Pull Me Under", the insincere pomposity of "Another Day" and "Surrounded").

4.5 superb | Fernando Alves STAFF | August 10th 11 | My favourite album from the most successful and inspired Prog Metal band of the 90's. Images and Words is an absolute prog classic. 5.0 classic | JimMatheos | November 10th 10 | Reading the splendid official band's biography "Lifting Shadows" (Rich Wilson) seems impossible that the album was so incredibly good. When I listened for first time I was in an amateur band. I showed immediately the stuff to the other guys. We get killed. Nobody in the world could beat that. For an innocent boy who liked metal & prog rock I&W was the Holy Grail. Mike Portnoy, Kevin Moore and David Prater (the producer) fought constantly in the studio for everything. Surprisely the songs sounds, even now, near perfection, better than anything they recorded in their future albums. "Pull me Under" riff (and the concise solo guitar), the crazy rythyms in "Take the Time", the grandiose epic sound in "Metropolis" and the orgasmic final "Learning to Live" was the best music moments in my youth. Definetily the album of my life.

5.0 classic | dante1991 | April 28th 10 | The one thing I love about this album the most (despite the fresh ideas, great lyrics, perfect production and super musicianship) is the pure ENERGY each band member seems to have. Everything sounds like it's had 100% effort put into it and the band sound like they're really enjoying performing - more so than on any of their other albums. There are no over the top solos and Labrie is at his best. Also Myung is also supurb here - especially his ORGASMIC bass solo on Metropolis! Highly recommended!
Top 3 Tracks: "Pull Me Under", "Take the Time", "Metropolis: Part 1"

5.0 classic | Islandjam2990 | March 4th 10 | Classic. There is no other words to describe this album other than TOTAL. CLASSIC. From beginning to end, it's just an onslaught of killer riffage, complex revolving time signatures, soaring vocals, and bass (you'll get that joke f you've heard their recent stuff)! Not to mention the classic! The timeless! The crown jewel of the album! Ladies and gentlemen... METROPOLIS, PART ONE! Ironically, the song is a precursor to another masterpiece (aptly named Metropolis, Part Two, or Scenes From A Memory. Or Both), but I digress. If you're a music fan in general, please... I implore you to check this album out. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 classic | Progmaster85 | October 25th 09 | Many would say that Scenes from a Memory is Dream Theater's best album. While it's one of the best Concept albums ever made, it cannot outshine the great Images and Words, my favorite Dream Theater album. Not one song on the album sounds too much like another. Sorry guys, but Scenes from a Memory doesn't have Under a Glass Moon. Many critics consider this a genre defining album for Progressive Metal, and I consider it the best one.

5.0 classic | ifwetrust | April 10th 09 | Ooh, I can remember the first time I heard of Dream Theater. "Dream ... Theater?! Progressive Metal? Uh, gaaaay ..." As a fan of Heavy-, Thrash- and Death Metal I never thought of hearing Progressive Metal or Power Metal or other genres with vocals which can reach heaven ... But, god thanks, I gave them a chance and the name of this chance was "Thought of Train". "Sounds heavy ... sounds nice ... oh real good solos in there ..." So I've listened a few times to them until I heard that Images and Words is their best album. A milestone in Progressive Metal and after one minute with Images and Words I was totally gob smacked. This album was the best I've heard sine Master of Puppets. This album is really a milestone and not only in Progressive Metal.
The other thing which fascinated me was the individual skills from each member. Petrucci is just god by himself. LaBrie has a freaky voice; I just wonder what the hell makes him sing like that. Skyscrapers like in Dubai are nothing complaining to this. Myung is a cool guy. I don't know if I ever heard him say something but hey he's the bassist. Mike Portnoy on the drums reminds me a little bit of Brann Dailor from Mastodon. I don’t know why but they sound familiar even though Mike isn't that chaotic. And finally Kevin Moore. I prefer Rudess but I think Moore isn't bad at all. At least it was him who done this crazy keyboard on Space-Dye Vest
But now, let's go with the review of Images and Words:
It starts with Pull me Under; a song with great atmosphere and lovely arrangements but still is a heavy song. Petrucci is warming-up with some awesome riffs and a great solo. If this is just the first song I am really curious for the following songs. So now it comes, one of my favorite songs from the whole album. Another Day. I've heard many people saying. "Oh, how boring ... it doesn't bang" *** them. This is Progressive Metal and no Porngrind. It has a rhythm which is programmed not to leave the brain until your dead. It's like a computer virus which gives a *** on Norton or Kaspersky because its ruling them blindly. Until the end of the song it's getting more and more breathtaking and then it explodes. Puh, 6 songs left...
Now it's getting more progressive with Take the Time with all those tempo changes it's coltish and cool and sometimes slow and serious. This song gives the album some alternation but still fits in the whole concept. Another favorite of mine on this album.
With Surrounded they've just composed their best song ever (in my opinion). It’s just Dream Theater. This song has all aspects I love this band. It's lyrically genius and instrumentally not from this world. LaBrie's voice has so much feeling in it, it's just incredible.
And there it goes: "Metropolis, Pt.1: The Miracle and the Sleeper" It took a lot of time getting into this song. The solo on this song is just awesome. One of the best Petrucci ever made. But the rest difficult. Some say it's an epos and the best on this album ... Can't agree but still it's a good song.
So the end is near ... Wait for Sleep gets the atmosphere of the Artwork and fits the feelings, colors and style of drawing very well. It's short but a nice bridge to Learning to Live which finally kicks ass. 11:32minutes of pure Dream Theater. Great rhythm, great sound ... everything’s great ... nothing left to say.
Dream Theater can be very proud of this peace of metal history. It's just stunning. Anyone who can’t get into Progressive Metal: No problem. With this album you will!
I would give 6points but their are little things whish are not soooo brilliant so it's "just" 5/5 ;-)

5.0 classic | badtaste | August 12th 08 | Despite criticisms of wankery and emotion-devoid music, Dream Theater's "Images and Words" is full of powerful moments, capable of pushing my emotional buttons as well as getting my adrenaline pumping. While each track is a gem in itself, the final two songs "Wait for Sleep" and "Learning to Live" (with lyrics by Moore and Myung respectively) are perfect examples of where Dream Theater combine beauty and technical skill.
