Oranssi Pazuzu Värähtelijä
A lot of things must go wrong for these guys to make a really bad album, and this is definitely not the case here. At the same time though, prevalent is the notion that the ambience and temporal spread of the album, work both in favour and against it, in terms of flow and ultimately replay time?. Favourite track: Vasemman Kden Hierarkia. Stream:

White Dog Double Dog Dare
Late '60s - early '70s rock doesn't get more "late '60s - early '70s rock" than this album, but I can't seem to shake the notion that the songs would benefit from a slightly heavier, less "classic rock" implementation.

Aardvark (AUS) Tough Love
Extremely tight and crude early '80s metal throwback, whose album art and part of the lyrical content are all too relevant these days… Favourite tracks: Fire, The Dream Is Nearly Over. Stream:

Malady (FIN) Ainavihantaa
The more Malady distance themselves from the norms of progressive rock, the closer they get to the genre's core, and this album continues what its predecessor started. The overall mood of the album is dark, yet not menacing, while the arrangements go from non-trivial funeral doom rock to jazz, the way its detractors would come to appreciate the genre. Stream:

War Grave War Grave
The first EP of this band shows great promise, namely the sound and arrangements in terms of power/thrash metal, however vocals need to improve in releases to come, especially since the singer appears to have the baseline of traits. Stream:

  • SkapalPes I dont know where everybody hears Death Metal in Disasseln records. OK, there is some slight influence, but this should be signed as Stenchcore imho. First it is crust punk and d-beat music. Anyway, thanx for adding this, great one!

  • kildare Thanks, I'll totally read that essay. He wrote little commentaries in the jackets of the Big Black releases that I've read numerous times. Sheesh. On top of everything else he was a great writer!
